Situated in the bay and nestling beneath the wide rolling downs Sandown offers a wide variety of leisure pursuits and interests, boat trips, watersports, golf, wonderful cliff walks and quiet water filled gardens.   Elsewhere on the island you can take a walk around the splendid formal gardens of Osbourne House, Queen Victoria's summer residence.   Then take a drive to the 12th century Carisbrook Castle.   If you visit the 17th century Calbourne Watermill, make sure you stroll down nearby Winkle Street, a picturesque collection of cobbled pavements and little shops.
For lovers of rare plants and animals, two musts are the award winning Ventnor Botanical Gardens  and the Rare Breeds and Waterfowl Park.
For some fun taken straight from your childhood, spend an hour or two at the Needles Pleasure Park where you can paddle at the edge of the famous Alum Bay sands.
And for some grown-up fun, make sure you are around during the famous Cowes Week when you can experience the thrill of Island life to the full.
